Mkomazi
The Park finds itself in a beautiful setting with both the Pare and Usambara mountains towering above its boundaries. Depending on the weather, Mount Kilimanjaro can also be seen from the park. To the south the pare and usambara mountains form a dramatic backdrop and to the north, Kenya’s vast Tsavo National Park shares a border with Mkomazi, making common ground for migratory herds of elephant, oryx and zebra during the wet season. Together with Tsavo, it forms one of the largest and most important protected ecosystems on earth.

Overview:
Mkomazi National Park is located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. Established in 1951, it covers an area of approximately 3,234 square kilometers (1,248 square miles). The park is known for its diverse landscapes, including savannah plains, mountain ranges, and acacia woodlands.
The park’s wildlife includes a variety of species such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and various antelope species including the endangered hirola antelope, which is found only in the border region of Kenya and Tanzania. Mkomazi is also home to predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas.
In addition to terrestrial wildlife, Mkomazi National Park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 450 bird species recorded within its boundaries. These include many endemic and migratory bird species, making it a paradise for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts.
One of the park’s notable conservation efforts is the reintroduction of African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, which were once locally extinct in the area. The park management works closely with conservation organizations to protect and restore the habitat of these endangered carnivores.
Mkomazi National Park offers a range of activities for visitors, including game drives, guided walking safaris, and birdwatching excursions. Its remote location and relatively low visitor numbers provide a more exclusive and authentic safari experience compared to more popular parks in Tanzania.
Overall, Mkomazi National Park offers visitors the opportunity to explore a lesser-known gem of Tanzania’s wilderness, with its diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and conservation efforts aimed at protecting its natural heritage.
